Office 2007 Custom UI Editor is a lightweight utility from Microsoft that helps developers create and maintain RibbonX (customUI) XML inside Office 2007 Open XML files. It lets you add, edit, and validate the XML that defines custom ribbons, tabs, groups, buttons, and context menus, and then save those customizations directly into documents and templates without unpacking the file.

Key capabilities:

  • Works with Open XML formats such as .docx, .dotx, .docm, .dotm, .xlsx, .xltx, .xlsm, .xltm, .pptx, .potx, .pptm, and .potm.
  • Inserts and edits RibbonX parts (customUI) and, where applicable, customUI14 for solutions targeting later versions of Office.
  • Embeds custom images into the document package and references them from Ribbon controls, or uses built-in imageMso resources.
  • Performs basic XML validation against RibbonX schemas to help catch structural errors early.

Typical uses:

  • Building custom ribbons and Quick Access Toolbar entries for VBA, VSTO/.NET add-ins, and document-centric solutions.
  • Packaging UI assets (XML and images) directly into the file to simplify deployment.
  • Maintaining versioned UI customizations across multiple Office documents and templates.

Notes:

  • Designed for the Office 2007 Fluent UI (Ribbon). Many customizations also carry forward to later versions that support RibbonX.
  • Best suited for Windows-based development workflows. Modern Office solutions may also consider Office Add-ins (web technologies) for cross-platform scenarios.

Office 2007 Custom UI Editor is developed by Microsoft. The most popular versions of this product among our users are: 2.0 and 2.1. The name of the program executable file is CustomUIEditor.exe.
